Tips for playing SUP for the first time

Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, is a fun and exciting way to explore the water. If you are looking to try SUP for the first time, here are some helpful tips to get you started.

Before you set off

  • Inflate the board to the recommended PSI.An under-inflated SUP is unstable. A sturdy SUP will not only make your movements safer, but also allow you to experience the fun to the greatest extent.
  • Attach your leash. And make sure it's attached to the board. Attaching a leash is very necessary for novices, not only to prevent the SUP from drifting away, but also to protect your safety.
  • Adjust your paddle to a suitable length.A paddle of appropriate length will make your movements smoother, increase your speed, and increase the fun of exercise. Of course, the appropriate length requires many adjustments. I believe you will find the length that suits you.

Ready to float

  • When taking the board into the sea, point it towards oncoming waves whilst standing/walking next to it. Hold handle to guide it and do not have it side on to the waves or have it between you and oncoming waves.
  • Practice moving between sitting and kneeling.Generally speaking, it is difficult for you to stand directly on a SUP, so first contact how to convert the two positions of kneeling and sitting.
  • Have one hand cupped over the end of the paddle and one hand about an arms length/shoulder length down the paddle. This way you can better control the paddle without losing power and being unable to move.

Try standing on a SUP

  • Find your balance.Take a few deep breaths and relax your body. Find your balance by shifting your weight forward and backward. Keep your hips centered over the board.

  • When you're ready, slowly stand up onto the board. Place one foot at a time on the board. Keep your feet parallel and shoulder-width apart. Keep your knees slightly bent.

  • Hold the paddle with both hands. Your hands should be shoulder-width apart, with one hand at the top of the paddle and the other hand at the middle.Start with short strokes and use your arms to move the paddle through the water. Keep your paddle close to the board to avoid losing your balance.
