Application of Sup Leash

In the sea, SUP surfing, a leash is a necessity not an accessory. And the vast majority of SUP surfers will wear a leash without hesitation. But using one is not the end of the SUP surfers responsibility. A big board at the end of a long leash could do a lot of damage in a crowed line up. And in the surf, a SUP board of any size on the end of a coiled leash is asking for trouble too!

For coastal exploration or flatwater paddling a leash makes sense most of the time, they are comfortable and don’t get in the way, and keep you connected to your board (flotation device).

FAQ

Q: Should you use a leash on a paddle board?

A: Always wear a leash, which makes the board your floatation device. In most places in the US, a coast guard approved floatation device is required and should always be worn on the body, not tied to the board.

Q: What leash for SUP?

A: This style of leash is ideal for SUP styles apart from surfing and white water padding. Connected with a D ring that's attached to the back of the paddle board meaning the leash does not trail in the water, or pick up debris or get snagged on any other potential obstructions.

Q: Is a straight or coiled SUP leash better?

A: A coiled leash is also great for general flat water paddling as it stops a lot of tangles around your feet and other items. A straight leash is more traditional and therefore many are more comfortable with a straight SUP leash.

Q: How long should a SUP leash be?

A: The general rule of thumb on SUP leashes is to get one that is as long as your stand up paddle board (give or take 1-2 feet). You don't just want to walk into a surf shop and get a standard 6', 7', or 8' short board surfing leash because it will be too short, and you'll end up getting hit by your board on the recoil.

Q: How long should a paddle leash be?

A: You can't really go wrong with a coiled SUP leash length in the 8-10 foot range. A shorter coil leash in this range will produce less drag in the water and diminish the chance of the leash becoming tangled around your feet when you're standing on top of your paddle board.

Q: Is a 4 foot leash too short?

A: I usually recommend the 4ft leash if being paired with the handsfree adapter (to prevent the leash tanging under foot), the 5ft for general every day walking and the 6ft length if you like to let you pup have some length to sniff and roam.

Q: Where do you put the leash on a SUP?

A: Find the metal D-Ring on the tail of your board (above the fins) and pass the pull tap of your leash through the ring.
